Ryan's began with that simple but powerful question. In 2018, while studying Food Technology at Egerton University, Kenya, two undergraduate students set out to solve a challenge they had seen across Kenyan homes and experienced themselves as students: limited time, limited energy, and limited access to convenient, nutritious meals.
Their earliest experiment was humble but bold. They cooked stiff maize meal (ugali), cut it into pieces, sun-dried it, and milled it into flour. The idea was grounded in science: once cooked (gelatinized), the flour could reconstitute instantly with water creating a fast, accessible meal for everyday life.
As they transitioned from rural to urban living between 2019 and 2022, the problem became even clearer. Urban life places pressure on time and income, while traditional cooking methods depend on biomass fuel such as firewood and charcoal higher costs, exposure to smoke, and continued pressure on forests.
Determined to find a better solution, one of the founders joined the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) in 2023 to advance this concept through formal training in instant food processing. By 2024, Ryan's was officially registered as an incubated start-up and began to grow.
But the true purpose of Ryan's was discovered much closer to home.
The first real user of what would become Ryan's Instant Uji Mix was a grandmother of one of the founders at the time recovering from a stroke. With the use of only one hand, she was able to prepare her own meal simply by mixing the instant flour with water. For the first time, she regained a sense of independence.
That moment changed everything. It revealed a deeper purpose: to design food not just for convenience, but for real-life conditions.
Today, Ryan's is built for busy families with limited time, for mothers and caregivers, for growing children, for patients in recovery, and for communities where access to safe, nutritious food is not always guaranteed. Because nutrition should be accessible, convenient, and inclusive for everyone.
